The Dynamics of Hongzhi’s Silent Illumination Practice with Taigen Leighton
05/06/2017 - 05/27/2017

Summary

Join Zen Teacher and scholar, Taigen Leighton for a four-week telecourse, exploring the teachings of Hongzhi Zhengjue, the 12th-century Chinese predecessor of Dogen. The dynamics of the poetic teaching of objectless meditation that were evocatively articulated by Hongzhi presents the basic practice of Soto Zen. The class meets for four consecutive Saturdays, May 6, 13, 20, & 27 at 9:00 am MT via the Zoom conference platform. Diane Musho Hamilton will host the May 20 meeting for review and integration.

After an introduction to the context of Song period Chinese Chan (Zen), we will explore the teachings of Hongzhi Zhengjue (1091-1157), important predecessor of Dogen and Japanese Soto Zen. Often using poetic nature metaphors, Hongzhi’s writing is an evocative, inspirational expression of meditative awareness and the wonder in the world. His teaching offers instructions in meditative perception, and explores the balance of serenity and calm with insight, along with the rhythm of turning deep within and sharing the outer expression of wisdom.

Primary reading will be Cultivating the Empty Field, trans. by Taigen Dan Leighton (Tuttle).
